We take a boat cruise this morning on a beautiful voyage out to Motuara Island,
a protected bird sanctuary to spend 1.5 hours exploring. Expect a short climb
through native forest with 360degree views from the hilltop lookout and
wonderful New Zealand native birdlife including the rare South Island
Saddleback (Tieke), Kakariki parakeets, the cheeky robin, and friendly
fantails.
After our visit here, the next water taxi will take us across to Ship Cove,
where your guides will explain the rich mythology and early Māori-European
history at this beautiful location.
This fascinating and remote historic and scenic reserve was visited by Captain Cook several times in the 18th Century as well as being a significant historical site of early Maori occupation.
Enjoy a the next 7km walk through stunning native coastal rainforest, over the
saddle (with views across to the Kapiti Coast) before descending into
Resolution Bay.
Bush is mainly a mixture of stunning podocarp and beech forest with ponga ferns and other New Zealand native foliage. This day is regarded as the premier section of the Queen Charlotte Track.
Many beautiful views are to be had across the Queen Charlotte Sound during our time on track.
We will supply a freshly packed lunch and you can enjoy a cup of plunger coffee or tea along the trail while taking in the views of the beautiful Marlborough Sounds.
A water taxi will return you from Resolution Bay around 2:30pm, returning to Picton in the afternoon around 5:00pm.
